Coatings Product Factsheet

       The Basics
To coat or not to coat? It is a common question you will hear one of our techs answering on the phone. There are many different opinions on the subject, but at MarylandSpeed both our customers and our own experience has made us firm believers in ceramic coating your headers. Because of that, we work very hard to make the coating process as affordable and painless as possible for our customers. We pride our self on offering many options for coating.

One of the options we offer are Calico Coatings. Calico is based in North Carolina in the heart of race county. We have added Calico to our coating line up because it is now Kooks PREFERED coating for their headers. If you order a coated header direct from Kooks, it will come with Calico coating.

Calico offers two coating for headers. The first, and most popular one is 1250 degree CT-23 CoolKrome. CoolKrome is a standard polished metallic look coating like Jet Hot Extreme Sterling.

DO NOT BUY header coating based solely on a temperature rating. The lower temperature rating vs. Jet Hot is because Calico rates the coating based on what temperature it can continuously endure. Other manufacturers rate the coating based on the the maximum it can endure for a very short time. Pretty much any silver coating we sell has to potential to dull above 1250 degrees based if exposed for more than a very short time. The dulling does not affect performance, and can be fixed with polishing.

The second coating they offer is CT-25 CoolBlack. This is a flat black coating rated to 1700 Degree flat black. It is preferred for supercharged engines, and ultra high performance applications.

Calico CT- 23 CoolKrome Coating Technical Information

The Calico CoolKrome coating is a low temperature cure ceramic coating. Ceramic Coatings are designed to protect steel, stainless steel, and non-metallic substrates. This coating is formulated to withstand temperatures of 2000°F flaking from the substrate, however, coating will lose its luster and color if exposed above 1250°F for extended periods. This coating is suited for high temperature components like exhaust systems and other components in close proximity to high temperatures. This coating maintains excellent adhesion properties through repeated thermal cycling while providing corrosion resistant characteristics and no reaction to repeated thermal shock.

Physical Properties Characteristic Property
Gloss Level High luster silver
Recommended Film Thickness 1.0 to 2.0 mils
5% Salt Spray Test >500 hours
Pencil Hardness 7h
Temperature Stability 1250°F (luster and color)

Calico CT- 25 CoolBlack II Coating Technical Information

The Calico CoolBlack II coating is a low temperature cure ceramic coating. Ceramic Coatings are designed to protect steel, stainless steel, and non-metallic substrates. This coating is formulated to withstand temperatures of 1850°F for extended periods without discoloring or flaking from the substrate. This coating is suited for high temperature components like exhaust systems and other components in close proximity to high temperatures. This coating maintains excellent adhesion properties through repeated thermal cycling while providing corrosion resistant characteristics and no reaction to repeated thermal shock.
